Kinja'd!!!

I know this post will get buried between the happy near year posts and the dance party coming up, but I'm angry now dammit!

Anyway, It ocures to me why the Toyota Tundra hasn't been able to really break into the new truck market like they hoped: Pickup truck buyers and arm chair truck buyers are racist. jingoist, whatever.

Seriously, I was reading !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the 2014 Tunrda and man, its full of morons. This is my favorite I think

"if toyota was so superior, they would have made another engine displacement besides 5.7L. the fact that they had to copy the displacement just goes to show everyone who doesnt already know that toyota and most japanese/asian manufacturers of anything copy what is good than come up with their own stuff."

But seriously, The more I read these reviews and the comments it seems like no one is going to give it a fair shake because 'merica, union jobs and so on.

I've been on Oppo too long, surrounded by reasonable, inteligent people and I forget that the world of pickup truck buyers are....

Holy crap!!! It has the same displacement as another engine??? They must have copied the whole design. It makes total sense now, the BMW M50B25 must have been where Mazda got the idea for the KLZE because both are 2.5 liters. Who cares that one is inline and the other is a vee. It's totally the same.

I think the Tundra's in the same position as Camry and Corolla competitors: the people who buy Silverados and F150's have always bought Silverados and F150's, or have had fathers and grandfathers who have always bought Silverados and F150's, and don't care enough to educate themselves and shop around, preferring to just go with what they know. This (hopefully) has nothing to do with racism, though the stray bigot may wander into the comment sections every now and again.

Have you ever read the comments on pickuptrucks.com? (that's a truck news site run by cars.com) My god, it's like a fucking war zone in there. And it's not just against the Japanese, Chevy guys hate Fords and Dodges with a burning passion that the Ford guys and dodge guys return. They are all idiots and they all sound just like that. Now, most truck buyers are either fleet, in which case they buy what is cheapest to run and which dealer fits them the best. Toyota doesn't know how to do that- the Tundra has low fleet sales, a bad thing in the truck world. Fleet sales are profitable in full size trucks, and the buyers will return again and again. Ford and GM dealers have entire dealership departments that only deal in fleets. You need to buy a thousand trucks? You go to the fleet manager and buy them.

Pretty fierce brand loyalty amongst your typical P/U buyers. They do seem to be irrationally over defensive/protective.

That is the nature of their blogs. Enough people make stupid remarks about a brand and everyone thinks "yeah, that's how I should think" Fair ones (as in Oppo), are an exception.

Toyota has a massive share of the small truck market, though.

I read one of those reviews. The joke about the reason the top of the line version is called 1794 (the amount of F-150s sold for every Tundra) was hilarious.

Oh, and my dad's 2002 4.7 Tundra rolled over 300k last night, no super major repairs yet, most interior lights work and are original, if that makes a difference.

It's just like any other turf war. Low blows that don't make any sense, and you have to remember a Toyota full-size pickup doesn't have the pedigree (good or bad) of the big three. Americans also like a range of pickups on the same plane as "proof" of worth with 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton options to be taken seriously. The truth is most full-size trucks aren't all that different in the first place, but you get a bunch of brand-loyal tardsticks chaining the bumper of a Ford to a Chevy and trying to out-pull one another as a way to see who's balls hang lower to the ground...You know, the people who like Flowmasters and have no concept of traction principals or maybe physics? A little bit (or quite a bit) of those dipwads lives within every pickup truck enthusiast, even if they don't care to admit it. Just like the Ford/Holden war in Australia exists for the same reasons - gearheads (myself included) are all somewhat whackadoodle, my friend...

The Tundra had been a flop(it was outsold by the Ranger at one point) because the pickup market is extremely brand loyal. Their customers tend to be the more "macho" of men who have always preferred the Big 3 and usually one in particular. Domestic fans also tend to be xenophobic as well, at least in my experience, but the biggest factors are brand loyalty and perception/image. It's the same reason people buy Camrys and Corollas, either they always have bought them or they're the "safe" choice when shopping.

The Tundras other problem is that it's far from a complete truck line. They only make a 1500 and I'll bet dealers don't have many of the work truck variants in stock.

I've never liked the current Tundra, since were on the topic. I think it's fucking hideous with a terrible interior, though I have yet to be in post-refresh model. The previous gen and the T100 were nice though.

I never cared much for the Tundra. But I opened this post and went "ooh look at that glorious thing."
